A Year in Review - 2019

Success is not measured in any one particular way, for some people success is reaching their professional or personal goals. For others, success can be measured in friendships and new relationships being made. For us at LEAP success has been measured in the number of lives we have impacted, in big or small ways. As we close this year, we want to share our success of reaching new goals, of meeting new people, making new friends, and of creating new opportunities. Here are some of the ways we feel we have been successful in 2019...  PRIDE Parade We thank our Command Staff and Chief Art Acevedo for always supporting our LGBT community and being not only present but also enjoy the event with us! PRIDE Parade 2018 As we close in 2019, I feel it is important to remember all that we have been through in just a few months. We, the group that was initially known as the "LGBT Committee," started long before 2019 when our Liaison, EJ Joseph, was assigned a project to get a group of queers together to form an employee support group.  The way I see it, a task was given to her, and she not only ran with it, but she made us who we are today!  EJ, thank you for all your sacrifice, God knows you have given our community sweat and tears so that we can be where we are now.   I remember talking to EJ long before Chief Acevedo wanted to form a support group, back when we were offering “Info Panels” at the Montrose Center with volunteers to show face. I recall sitting with one of our ACs, about eight years ago, and discussing how the idea of such a group was not even in sight or a possibility. My wishful and naïve mind was in awe at how closeted everyon...

Holidays with SPRY

Holiday Cheers A season of giving and sharing is what Christmas is all about. This year LEAP members donated, wrapped, and delivered gifts to the Seniors Preparing for Rainbow Years at The Montrose Center. Thank YOU to all of the members who participated in this event and all those who helped out in the process. We could not have done it without you! Our Door Prices!!! Beautiful Gifts!  Finally...some food!  Winner of our "Most Creative" and "Best Wrapped" Presents Our President Delivering our Certificates of Appreciation!!! THANK YOU!!! Sunday Funday Holiday Basket Extravaganza Sunday, December 8, 2019 @ 1pm - 5pm The Montrose Center: 401 Branard St, Houston, TX 77006 Everyone is invited to help with the stuffing and dressing of 200 Holiday Baskets that The Montrose Center is preparing for families and individuals who are chronically unemployed, seniors and disabled individuals surviving on fixed incomes, individuals in transitional housing after fleeing from abusive partners, and persons who are starting over after recovering from addictions.  If you would like to attend, please contact Sgt Estrada Everyone is Welcome! November Upcoming Event

HPOU Family Picnic  The union is hosting an amazing Family Picnic at the Oil Ranch again this year. If you have never been, this is a great opportunity to check it out! It is a great event for Families with Kids HOWEVER there are plenty of opportunities to have fun and have a great time with friends!  Saturday, November 9, 2019 @ 12pm (noon) Oil Ranch: 23501 Macedonia Rd, Hockley, TX  Everything's better with a friend!  Some of our Board Members will be meeting at the Union (1600 State St) and driving together to the Picnic. Community Service with SPRY

We had a great morning with our SPRY Seniors during our first Community Service Event! We all learned how to play Mexican Dominoes and Regular Dominoes. We also helped finish up a puzzle and had wonderful conversations! I am looking forward to our next event...we are already discussing details on our Holiday events and cannot way to see everyone there!

October Newsletter Houston LEAP Pride Newsletter  October 2019  Good Morning Everyone! I wanted to send an update about the current events and updates on what we have going on. As you may have noticed we are trying out new things, we have our domain for emails, we are working on a website, and trying out newsletter template websites to make it easier for everyone to subscribe and unsubscribe etc. We have a lot of exciting plans going forward with our Organization. The Board is working hard on constructing the Bylaws in order to legitimized our Professionalism and be able to offer more services to you all aside from the social aspect we have been focusing on the last couple of months.
